Tales of an Artist Afloat
In the school holidays I headed down to Taupo with my husband and our friends Karen, Alex and Tilly. The beautiful town and nearby mountains gave me lots of sketching opportunities, and my friends were happy for me to draw- though it was a good motivation to work fast! Drawing when on the road also made working quickly a necessity, Sketching sledges and skiiers was also a challenge- I found that I needed to watch really carefully before I drew to capture the key poses in my mind's eye. Portraying faces was the hardest part- I struggle with that even when people are still! We built a snowman, though the icey snow made it tricky to make the facial features and buttons stick! He ended up less Olaf and more like a snowy version of The Scream. Calvin and Hobbes would be proud... Taupo is home to some amazing street art. Each October it hosts the Graffito festival. Side streets, carparks and alleys are stunning outdoor galleries and it pays to poke around and keep your eyes peeled! Which is your favourite? We also loved L'Arte cafe, which has a gorgeous garden and gallery. After a delicious lunch we enjoyed exploring the gardens which are full of mosaics and ceramics, both beautiful and quirky. The tea pot tree was a fun favorite, but the mosaic outdoor living room had to be the highlight!

I like the ship sailing off the edge of the building, wasn't that beside the happy hour Pub? Lots of good ideas come at Happy Hour, in Taupo.
