'Refuge' 11" x 14" Watercolour
Rippling blue waves roll from the ocean and lap the edges of a West Coast beach in this original watercolour painting. Depicting Execution Rock near Bamfield, Vancouver Island, this modern coastal landscape captures the tide pools and rocky headlands that typify the region in a bright, semi-abstract style.
I initially sketched 'Refuge' on location, and later recreated the plein air watercolour as a finished piece. The name of the piece reflects both the past and the present of Execution Rock. In days gone by, the Kiixin tribe would hide their children in the rock's hollow interior during times of war, ensuring their safety. Today, the undeveloped and remote beach is a refuge from the pace of modern life.
